Autumn Colours Run October 2009 - Tregaron

Hello all, I am writing this after the hour and a half drive home from Tregaron in our MODERN car.  I hope everyone who took their classic had an enjoyable trip and made it home safely, at least the sun came out for it!

Before I start talking about the run, I would like to thank all those who turned out for what was a very wet start to the day, and as you can see from the pictures of Pont Abraham car park we had quite a few members in their classics and an extra visitor picking up a gearbox from Stuart (we should start calling him Arthur Daley) as well as a hand full of moderns or “future classics”.

The weather did not dampen the spirits of those in attendance, who were all looking forward to the day with great optimism that it would brighten up.

JJ did observe that getting to the start point for this run was actually longer than some runs in the past, whilst attempting to sell camping chairs at a rock bottom price (which I don’t think the management of the services knew about).

We left the meeting place and headed off on the run, our plan (Carol & myself) was to take everyone up and over the Black mountains and down into mid Wales, the views would be fantastic and breath taking, as they were on your test run a fortnight before. Unfortunately the mist was a little too low for use to appreciate the view, which should have been something like this;

After a leisurely pit stop in the very popular (this year) Llandovery, we all set of for the second leg of the run and after a short drive deeper into mid Wales and a little stop for a TR4 (no names mentioned) to catch up, we turned off the main road and onto the single track old drovers trail.

It is very difficult to put into words for those who did not attend how the meandering 14 miles of road makes you feel, traversing a ledge in the hillside, the road climbs from Abergwesyn, soon becoming incredibly steep and windy - a 1 in 4 gradient over an seemingly endless series of hairpin bends, the aptly named Devil's Staircase - through thick forests with different colours of foliage, the rises and falls, which made your car feel like a boat on a wave, the waterfalls, river crossings and the panoramic views, all mixes together to make this hidden route one of the best driving experiences in Wales.  Below the Abergwesyn Pass

Reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands, the road opens up onto the moorland and Mynydd Elenydd Range of the Cambrian Mountains and some spectacular broad open scenery of vast skies and emptiness. It finally descends through a forestry plantation before dropping into Tregaron.

Listening to all the comments in the restaurant after about sore arms, worn out ball joints, not being able to see where the road went and commitments from those who already want to return again, I think everyone who attended would agree it was a great drive, and the weather enhanced it.

For all those who did experience it, you will not be shocked to know it is very popular with the rally crowed, but may be shocked to know that our own JJ has rallied on this route at approximately 80mph! No ABS or airbags in those days!

Lunch was booked in the very charismatic Talbot Hotel in the heart of Tregaron and I do believe everyone enjoyed the meal, although the way the courses were served was very unorthodox.

After lunch the discussion turned to the route home, and for many the realisation of how far from home they were, some even decided to travel the same way home to enjoy the pass again, but as I said earlier, at least the sun had come out.

Regards Alan
